The charities auction off the cars and use the proceeds. I donated an old SUV once and I’ve personally known charities who use that system. It works out well. Just investigate any charity that you donate to first, as there are a lot of scams out there.

Mechanics who donate their time, fix it up. Then the car is sold for cash which is then placed in their, the charities, general fund. Cars can also be given to families who have, for example, lost everything in a fire. When donating a car, get a receipt which lists the fair market value, this helps at income tax time.

you just hve to call around and see who has them to give, they check your income levels and make sure you are worthy and truly in need of one to get to and from work and what not. if you have children, and your family status. And no they are usually not wonderful cars or anything,,, they are donated from people who do not want them and do not use them anymore for whatever reason, if they were worth a lot of money , most people would try and sell them, most are worth under $2000, but they have been fixed up so they are ready to drive. and as for just getting money for one,, its VERY hard to be able to just get that. its a long process.. well a month or so.

There are reputable charities like the Battered Womens Shelters or even the Public Aid offices in various states. I do know that Ohio has a program that allow people to donate their vehicles to people in need through the perspective city that the person lives in. You would have to call the Public Assistance office to find out about their policies on receiving a donated vehicle. Hope this information helps.

I tried to purchase on of these cars in Detroit, and met with no hope. Tired and uninterested people working behind big plexiglass panels with signs telling you to go get a money order from the liquor store. Broken down horrible cars, some without motors, all priced in the thousands. No help at all. Craigslist advertising and a low price would be the best way to help out low income families looking to get a car.

I have never done that but there are some places here in San Antonio that you can donate a vehicle and get it back on your income tax.

I purchased a car from a group called the Good Samaritan here in Stockton. It cost me 2,000.00. It was at a time when my son was blindsided by a drunk driver totally our car. Thank god he was not hurt. We were desperate for transporation. the car that was damaged was our first new car with heat and air and great on gas. This good samaritan reverend said the car we were buying from him whiule aesthetically lacking, ran well and was good on gas. We borrowed money to pay for the car. Two weeks later the engine blew and now it sits in our field worthless. I guess it’s true, caveat emptor Buyuer beware, even when it comes to GOOD SAMARITANS

I actually got my car from an organization like this. I’m a single parent working for Walmart. I couldn’t afford a good car and was tired of getting ripped off by buy-here-pay-here places. Erie Dawn Inc asked people to donate their cars to them to help people like me. I agreed to take a budget class once a month and I was very diligent with my courses. I received from them a 1999 Lincoln Continental on October 4th of this year. It was donated by a couple who lived in Florida and weren’t using the car. It was in beautiful shape and needed no work. I am thankful to have this car and also for the classes that help me pay for my expenses.

One of my sisters was asleep in her trailer last week, when her trailer caught on fire, and she lost everything she owned, except she did get out with her two small dogs. Theres a place here in Fairfield, CA that takes donated cars for charity, they donated her $1,200 dollars to help get her back on her feet.

I know that Purple Heart takes donated cars and you get a receipt to use for your income tax as the value in donation.. I don’t think they give the cars to any one they are sold at auction and then the money is used to help the needy . and I know they do.

I have never received a car from charity but I am sure that in Tx there are tons of places you could go and get free cars. I know in Katy, TX you go call or go to KCM and they would help you.

Hello and yes I have. Not saying that they will all be like this but, the van that my fiance got from one was really nice from curb side view but, maybe 6 mo later the timing went bad and the man at the place told us it was a new engine. The had just power washed the engine to make it look really really good. the timing went bad 2 more times and that was like $500 each time so we just gave up on the van it was really nice out side and in.

Looks like this is just a hustle to get used cars under a non-profit company. Of course you have to give some cars away so they will not catch on to you. They should make a list of all cars that were donated and who got them.

yes, I actually lived at a shelter for abused women, and a man donated a car, there were only two of us in the house who were able to take ownership of a car, and so the shelter drew names, and I won.

No, unfortunately I have not. But I have been the recipient of a car from a couple in my church. They bought a new car, and wanted to give the car to a single mother in our church. They chose me, and just called up and wanted to know if I would be home so they could drop it off and sign over the pink slip to me!

My car was falling apart and needed more work than it was worth. They gave me a 2003 car, still under warranty!!!

I woke up at 4:30 am certain that I must have dreamed it, and went to the window and looked out, and sure enough, there sat the car. I sat on my bed and cried. I was so humbled by their generosity and kindness. They asked one thing in return, that I not tell anyone who gave it to me, because as they put it, it was really God who provided.

I never get into that care without offering a prayer of gratitude and ask God to bless them. And it changed so much more than just providing transportation for my children, it enabled me to go to school, and to improve the overall quality of my life.

What happens to my knowledge is that these charities accept the donated car, and many of them sell them to receive cash benefits, from car dealers and auctions etc. I have never personally bought one from them though, I have hear of some people who had and got very good deals.

The Good Will fixes up those cars and they have a special program for girls with babies to get a used car. However I would suggest you refer 5 people to me (you get $2,000. for every referral you then buy your car with that. Besides you also get $5,000. for every Real Estate investment client you refer (paid daily right now) They pay me the $8,650. they go get their car. You receive $2k. If they do the Real Estate College too you receive $7k! Michael “CALEB” Smith, S.O.G.

I did receive a car from one of these charities back in 2004. It’s actually a minivan (I still drive it) and it’s turned out to be one of the best (and nicest) used cars I’ve ever had. The charity told me that I got lucky (I would call it Blessed) though, that the cars they usually get are not as nice as the one I received. Contact United Way (dial 211 from any land line phone in any state) and tell them what you’re looking for. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

I live in NJ and gave much thought to donating my car. It was 6 years old with 65000 miles and no dents or scratches when it died while being driven. It needed a new transmission and something else. I finally decided to donate it rather than fix it. I donated it to a neighboring Fire Dept for use in teaching the Jaws of Life. I later saw a photo of my car after is was in a simulated accident ready for the Jaws of Life to be used. I was happy that I could help the Fire Dept teach something that may one day save a life. If you decide to donate to a Fire Dept, just call the Headquarters in your area and they should be able to direct you.

Great Question! I always thought that they sold the cars and used the money in their particular charity as they saw fit. I am anxious to see if anyone in need has ever received an automobile.

Yes, I do know of someone who has received a car from a local charity in the Antelope Valley (northern Los Angeles County of California). The family had the car for several years. This car allowed the family to get to doctor appointments, etc. without relying on public transportation or others. What a blessing!
Many veterans organizations, homeless/food shelters, battered women’s shelters, and orphanages have this type of program in place.

Our local United Way has donated cars to our local people in need. However, they hold the title for one year and then sell it to the person for $1.00. This way people are less likely to take advantage of the program. One such person was a mother with many little ones and needed transportation to take the children to daycare and then get to work. She was walking in the winter with the children and to work. The program helped her alot. You will always find someone trying to take advantage of every program and there are many fraudulent charities out there. These people make it hard for the real programs to assist people. Just look in your heart and know that if you donate something that even if the people that you actually gave it to did not do as they promised… that you know your reasons for giving was to help and “Karma” or the old saying “What goes around, comes around” does apply. They will get theirs and you will get yours. You can’t worry about what happens after you have done your good deed. Let God take care of it from there. (If you must have proof then call your local BBB and check out the agency). Rest assured though that when you give without intentions of what it can do for you… when you give from the heart… things have a way of working out. You trust that when you give your $$ to church or the bell ringer that it will be used for good… just know that no matter what… if you give with an honest heart things will work out the way they are suppose to.

Yes I have called the Volunteer of America to donate my car, Chevy Cavalier ‘88 and was told to stop by at the local Volunteer of America office to bring some vehilce registration, title, and other identication. They processed everything from here to there. They made arrangement with impound truck with no charge and paper to fill it out (released information). It was very simple things to do.

Yes I recevied a car from a charitable organization It was in Lewisville, Texas Chistian Community Action I was going to the clinic which is also part of the organization along with a food bank, rent assistance and alot more .Any way, I was in need of a car and was teaching school. One of the nurses told me to apply for it, They look at your situation and then deternmine if you qualify. Then once you are given the car you have to pay the license and have insurance and tilte transfer
this was over a year and I still drive the 1995 Grand Prix

Of course you need to maintian it like oil changes and flushing things like the radiaitor, oil, and transmision since I did not know how long it was since those things had been done .. It is a great place if you find them know your source

The car runs great and no problems

Most Churches or schools will be able to help with information as to who would like to donate a car for some one in need

Some times the school has a shop where they have cars donated to them they they fix them and sell them or in some cases donate them

Good luck in your search …

Hi, I am in Maryland and I know that a community organization called Rescue Mission has collected cars in the past. There are local church who also will have the information that you are looking for. They will be able to guide you along.
A friend received a nice Volvo from an organization like that. It ran for years and she was truly blessed.

I recived a car from a church in Plano. Texas. I am a single father of three, Disabled, and I was working at the time. We just left a homless shelter, and got an apartment. Some of the People at the homless shelter got in touch with a church that does these things, and a few weeks later I got a 1986 Cutless Supreme. it was about 11 years old, but My feet were 40 years Old. My power sterring went out about three months later, and one of My son Teachers had me take the car to the high school auto shop, they got the parts and fixed my car in no time. About a three months later, A man in a brand new porsch took off my front end, He ran a red light. No More Car. I have had three heart attacks since then, so I dont work again, but to answer your question yes they are out there, They are not the best cars, but they wont give you a car they think will get you hurt.

I know someone that worked for a so called charity that took cars for donations. He told me that the so called charity sold the cars and put the money in their operating fund bank accounts. He told me that not once did the charitry ever give a single car to anyone.
