I recently obtained a car from a close friend of mine free of charge. Unfortunately, the car has no title. Her grandfather purchased the car from a Charity Auction in California around a year ago and gave it to her to drive. She didn’t want the car and since my car recently quit, I was in a pinch. I’m not sure if the state I live in matters, but just in case, it’s Tennessee. The car is an ‘84 Toyota Tercel Station Wagon.

Other than the transmission needing replaced, the car is in reasonably good condition considering it has 144,000 miles. Kelly Blue Book value is @ $2500 in poor-fair condition but that is rough b/c no specific questions about the transmission were asked and that is the only major thing wrong with the car. There is also a small dent on the front right bumper. Should I donate it, try to sell it, or use a 3rd party such as Carmax or caralternative.com? I still owe $1700 on it and would like to get enough money through the best means to pay off the remaining debt if possible. I didn’t trade the car in when I bought my new car because I bought the new car in a different state and the cost of towing would have been a nightmare. This is the first car I’ve had to get rid of. Your advice will be most appreciated.
I bought a car at a donation center and the title has a lien, this lien holder is now out of business?

How can I remove the lien from the car title if this dealership is no longer in business. It took me 2 years to fix the car and now i cant register it in PA because of the lien issue.

Dealer never repossessed car even though they had my current address. This dealership only sells donated, charity cars. Dealer intentionally lied about bad transmission, so I refused to pay remainder of $800 balance when I found out within a week of purchase. Dealer has title, I’m registered owner. Can I just tow it w/paperwork to dealer’s lot?
