Will you donate your house, your car, most of your clothes, and all your other assets to charity. Then leave your wife or your husband, your son, your daughter to go and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ?
Jesus said that to the rich young ruler in order to get eternal life.
This is straight for the horse’s mouth.

No way. The man is dead. Plus, if he’s moving I’d be worried and imagine he’s following me in search of brains.

Jesus wouldn’t ask me to do that but a cult would.

The bible says for you to deny yourself, take up your cross and follow him. That means put your desires and self last, and put him first. If God tells you to do that, then you should do it. He created you, why not live for him?

Been there, done that! It was a wonderful experience.
At 18 I left college and material goods of my parent’s home to go with a Jesus people group to do street preaching.
We lived in tents with a trunk for personal things, and a big tent for big evening meetings. We traveled in the States, Europe Philippines, and sent groups to India, Mexico, Pakistan, and Russia. I spent 14 years with that group and then worked with a Bible School in the Philippines for 5 years. I’m back in a more normal life but God still guides me in different ways.
Only… do such a thing if you are sure of personal guidance from God. God will open the opportunities for the best path for you.

If I believed that was the right thing to do, then yes. At present I don’t see adequate reason to believe that it is.

In that scenario Jesus was asking the guy to literally follow Him “personally”. So to answer your question, Yes, if He was standing right there asking me to follow Him “literally” rather than meaning follow me, as in follow my teachings.
In regards to us it means we should not love our earthly blessings of family, and riches more than we love the Savior. Nor should we put those things in front of serving Him.
He was using a literal event as a way to illustrate his point.
We all use literary devices every day to better express ourselves. Why try and use that against the Savior when he was doing the same thing we all do every day? It just goes to show no one is so blind that refuses to see.

Spiritual fullfilment can’t be bought for any amount of money. I’ve always believed that all people have some sort of “riches” that should be shared with others. And for those people who receive and adhere to a particular type of “calling,” then I say more power to them. But a “spiritual calling” doesn’t necessarily make people “good” human beings. And not every single person on Earth receives a specific “spiritual calling.” It’s not as if good graces can be bought like a sandwich.
Being a good person is about how people live their every day lives and how they treat other people. Money and materialistic things don’t have to corrupt a person’s lifestyle.
I’ve always believed that giving to people in need says a whole lot about a person’s character. Personally, I see nothing wrong with people enjoying some of life’s luxurious amenities, as long as money isn’t used to hurt others. I don’t feel as if I have been “commanded” to give to anyone. It’s the way I’ve always lived my life and I think that God approves of my generosity. I also believe that He would want me to remain married, raise my family and not leave the people that I love.
